Term Limits – We’ve Always Had This

Periodically there’s a push for a Constitutional amendment for term limits on legislators, who we elect. Note the previous sentence ended with, “who we elect,” not “who are elected for us.”

What’s a Constitutional Amendment? It’s a supreme “law” for which a Constitutional challenge is impossible. Not even the United States Supreme Court can declare that law unconstitutional.

It’s a law that Gorilla glues one of our relationships with government. It’s a people/government shall or shan’t. It’s not a sorta if, maybe or if we feel like it.

There are a number of reasons given for a term limit amendment. Some are:

  • End making career politicians

  • Reduce the voting distrust of the person next to you, who by the way is a fellow American

  • Reduce the power growth of individual legislators

  • Reduce the opportunities to influence/buy legislators

  • Reduce the opportunities to influence/buy voters

The 22nd Amendment is a term limit for the office of the President. We are prohibited from electing the same person as President more than twice, consecutive doesn’t matter.

Amendments such as this constrain the freedoms of The People to choose their representatives. We would continue to have the freedom to not choose someone. We would limit our freedom to choose someone.

Term limit amendments reduce our freedom in the ballot box. We can do that to ourselves. We have the power to limit ourselves in any way we choose because it’s our Constitution. Just as we have the power to free ourselves in any way we choose because it’s our Constitution.

We decide on term limits every time we vote. Currently it’s a Constitutional freedom to make term limit decisions on each person every time we vote. If there’s an amendment, then we will no longer make term limit decisions on each person every time we vote. The amendment will decide for us.

Should the Constitution represent how much or how little we trust our fellow Americans? Do we strengthen America with increasing or decreasing trust? Is the Constitution our rules for preventing the destruction of America or encouraging its self-destruction? The power of We the People decides.
